Providing NHS staff with spaces that care for them

Funding from NHS Charities Together and Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals' Charity enabled the creation of the hub.
A wellbeing hub has been created at Ashford & St Peter's Hospitals, providing staff with a dedicated space to exercise, socialise and unwind.
Comprising of gym facilities, a canteen and relaxation areas, the hub enables staff members like Joelle and Mark to de-stress, improve their physical and mental wellbeing, and nurture friendships with colleagues.
Joelle is a Pastoral Support Officer to International Nurses and Midwives. She said:
“I started using the wellbeing hub to get fitter. I have had some health issues with my hip which have held me back a little, but I am building myself up to going to the gym three times a week.
“I noticed a huge difference in my mental wellbeing in the first initial sessions and felt much better about myself.
“We are so lucky as staff to have this as a resource that is free and on-site. We don’t take it for granted as gym memberships can be extortionate, especially in the cost-of-living crisis, so to be able to have this facility available is just amazing. It always seems to be in use regularly, which is nice to see.
“When I have done tours of the hospital for our international nurses and open the doors to the hub, everyone is always blown away. It's great to be able to offer it to our new staff. You just see people’s faces light up as soon as they see what’s on offer.”
Mark is an Interventional Radiology Superintendent. He said:
“I go to the gym regularly for my health and wellbeing and this has increased recently after I was diagnosed with diabetes. It’s very convenient for me to be able to head downstairs and use the facilities with ease.
“I work Monday to Friday 9-5 and being at work all day can be stressful, so this facility enables me to de-stress and has had a very positive impact on my physical and mental health.
“I use it three to four times a week and a lot of my colleagues use it regularly and have nothing but good feedback. It has definitely been a hit with our department.”
