The lifechanging equipment that is helping patients learn to walk again

A rehabilitation treadmill that helps patients learn how to walk again.

Funding from NHS Charities Together enabled Brighter Futures to buy the treadmill.
In March 2023, Louise sustained a spinal cord injury that resulted in her being in hospital for seven months.
She was told she would never walk, stand, or sit again. However, thanks to a rehabilitation treadmill from Brighter Futures, the charity for Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Louise was able to practise walking and improve her mobility.
Now, she credits the treadmill with her recovery. She said:
“It was an injury that I shouldn’t have survived, and I knew life was never going to look the same.
“I was introduced to an incredible team of physiotherapists, and I spent a total of six months with them. They worked tirelessly with me so I could learn how to sit again and, once I had mastered that, I began to learn to stand. From this, Alex, the physio, asked if I was willing to try the treadmill.
“I was terrified I was going to fall, but the harness made me feel safe and secure, and it gave me confidence in my ability instantly. After three weeks I was able to move my feet by myself. A feeling I can’t describe. We kept practising and practising, taking the weight off so I could slowly learn to walk with my own weight again. I then managed 300 metres and from there it hasn’t stopped.
“I wholeheartedly believe if it wasn’t for that treadmill I wouldn’t be walking. When I was told I would never walk again my entire world fell apart. It was devastating but thanks to this incredible piece of kit I have my life back.
“It's not the same life I had before but it means my boys have a mum they can still do things with and a mum that can hug them. I am a wheelchair user now but only outside of the house. This treadmill has enabled me to get around my house and not need 24/7 care.
“The NHS was there from the moment I sustained this horrendous injury up to where I am now, and I am so thankful for this service.”
