What will you thank the NHS for?

Dave’s story

A birthday tea party to remember

Dave was born just a few weeks after the NHS was founded and is so grateful for all the support it has given him and his loved ones since. To show his appreciation, in 2023 Dave hosted a special tea party for his community. He invited all his neighbours to come together to celebrate the NHS’ 75th birthday and raise money for NHS Charities Together.

Everyone got involved, with children decorating paper teapots and Dave hosting a range of activities, including a ‘guess the number of tea bags in the jar’ game. 75, of course!

Dave’s favourite part of the day was having conversations with different people, those he has always known and some he had never talked to before.

“I wanted to do something special for the NHS and it was a great opportunity to chat with my neighbours and bring us all together. I would encourage anyone to get involved in fundraising and make a difference.”

Why Dave chose to support us

“I’ve grown up with the NHS, it’s a national treasure, essential and so very special. My mother was able to live into her 90s due to the fantastic healthcare system. That provision of extra happy years of life would certainly not have happened under a different system. My father passed away from ill health in 1962 and didn’t have the privilege to access such a wonderful service in his earlier years.

“The NHS has also supported my wife through her MS diagnosis, including local District Nurses, right up to her death last year. She owed her life to the NHS, having had operations for spinal tumours in her teens. I recently had my own health scare when I developed intense chest pains followed by violent hiccups. I rang 111 and they sent an ambulance in 20 minutes. I was taken straight to a bay in A&E.”

“We should celebrate the NHS we have, not allow it to suffer any lessening of the pioneering research, maintain the multitude of treatments it provides and thoroughly support all those hard-working people within it.”
