Thanks to donations to our Covid-19 Appeal, York Teaching Hospital Charity has funded sensory toys to keep children occupied during their staying at York Hospital.
Facilities usually available to youngsters on the children’s ward have been limited due to Covid-19. The ward has been split into hot and cold wards, meaning the majority of the equipment the Play Team provide to the patients also had to be split.
The wards particularly needed baby and sensory equipment to help keep the youngest patients occupied during their stay. Patients like two-year-old Harryson have been restricted by social distancing so cannot play in the playroom or sensory room as they usually would.
Joe Fenton, Community Fundraiser, said:
“Due to single patient use and patients being confined to their room, the Play Team were in need of singular sensory equipment. The main loss during the pandemic has been the baby and sensory equipment that we have, as we have found that these age and ability groups are the main residents on the ward. The generous donations received meant we could provide new sensory and interactive toys, which has benefitted the wellbeing of the patients and their carer throughout their stay, which currently is a lot more stressful than it would be usually.”
Urgent Appeal Grants
Grants given to NHS charities are used to meet the immediate and urgent needs of patients, staff and volunteers. Funding is also going towards helping partnerships outside hospitals, such as hospices, community healthcare and social care, making sure patients leaving hospital have access to the care they need to recover. In the longer term it will also fund programmes to help staff and volunteers recover fully once the crisis has abated, reducing the long-term impact on them and the people they care about.
